Son of Rambow is a fun movie, with a bit of a look at the darkness of human nature. The story follows an 11 year old boy as he winds up befriending the school bully, and they make a lively home movie together, based on having seen the movie, “Rambo”.
Will, the star of the movie, is a very quiet and shy boy, and he and his family belong to a very strict religion, which dictates that they are not allowed to enjoy entertainment media. He even has to leave the classroom if the teacher puts on a documentary for the students to watch.
The bully, Lee, has been abandoned by his parents and is the ward of his bossy older brother. He is the worst-behaved kid in the entire school. He has access to his brother’s film-pirating equipment and that is, in part, what inspires him to make the movie.
They are both quite lonely and really bond with each other in the making of their movie. The rest of the kids at school soon find out about the movie and many of them wish to be in it themselves. Will invites them to come along, and Lee is quite upset by this, telling Will it was better when it was just the two of them.
It is a very adventurous and rambunctious movie with some very funny stunts. And it has an extremely pleasing ending!

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a great family show! It is a funny portrayal of the different holidays we celebrate and what it is like to actually live in those holidays year round!
The ‘people’ of Halloween Town seem to think that all there is to life is scaring people. Jack, the skeleton guy ruler of Halloween Town, thinks there must be something else out there. There must be more to life than just this year-long preparation for the ‘Best Halloween Yet’ every single year.
He takes a walk with his ‘dog’ and stumbles into a portal with doors leading to different holidays. He accidentally falls into the Christmas one. He is astonished and surprised at all of the jolliness of the townspeople.
He quickly goes home and describes it to everyone back in Halloween Town. And he decides to kidnap ‘Sandy Claws’ and run Christmas himself! What happens is nothing short of a disaster, though!
Luckily, things wind up turning out alright. I won’t tell you what happens, in case you haven’t seen it yet. Things do turn out fine, though, and there is even a little romance brewing throughout the film!
The new Collector’s Edition release of the film comes with plenty of extra features and it also comes with something that is totally new to me. I had to look it up on Amazon to really understand what it was. It is called a Disney Digital File that you can put in your computer and copy it to your hard drive or you can copy it to a compatible iTunes or Windows Media portable player. So you can watch it on the go - or even just on your computer.
Image via Wikipedia Teenage drama, teenage romance, and teenage wanna-be rock stars - the movie, Camp Rock, has it all! And of course there is the fun of camp, too!
Camp for kids is a little bit like a dry run of going away to college. Although there are grownups around, and you are supervised, you are still a LOT more independent than you are at home. Movies about kids at sleep-away camp are always fun!
Mitchie is the lead female in the movie and she really wants to go to Camp Rock, but, it is very expensive and her parents can’t afford it. Her mother, however, is a caterer and takes her catering business to Camp Rock and Mitchie can go, if she will help in the kitchen. She agrees - and she tries to hide this fact from the other campers.
Shane Gray is a pop star with a bad attitude, so his bandmates drop him off at Camp Rock to teach singing and dancing lessons, in an effort to straighten him up.
These two facts lead to a Cinderella issue in the movie. And the ‘prince’ does fall for the ‘poor stepdaughter’, but, instead of looking for a girl who fits the glass slipper - he was looking for the girl with the heavenly voice. He finds her on the night of the Final Jam and they wind up singing their two songs together.
Sammie had been really looking forward to this movie as a Disney Channel Original Movie - and now she is totally thrilled that we own it on DVD!

Miley Cyrus has been in the news quite a few times lately, due to questionable behavior. I have decided that it is still perfectly fine for me to adore her two characters that she plays on her show, though! I really like the show and I like her music, too (shh! don’t tell anyone!) and I didn’t want to give that up, because, Miley’s being a silly teenager. We all did stupid stuff at that age - we just weren’t being put on the 6 o’clock news with our shenanigans. (Thank God! And my mother thanks you, too, God!)
So I was rather excited when we got the DVD, Best of Both Worlds Concert: The 3-D Movie: Extended Edition. We enjoyed this movie - it showed Miley in several of her concert stops over the course of her 2007 Tour. She really keeps the crowd up and excited! She seems to kind of get out of breath fairly quickly - but, she is definitely pumped up!
They also showed a lot of behind-the-scenes happenings of a traveling tour and all of the hard work that it is for everyone involved. And the Jonas Brothers also perform in the movie.
It is a 3D movie and I’ve heard that was pretty cool in the theater with newfangled digital 3D glasses. That cannot be replicated on TV’s, though, so we are stuck with the old-fashioned red and blue 3D glasses, which makes the experience a little more hokey. It was still kind of fun, but, hokey nonetheless.
This extended edition comes with two DVD’s - the 2D version and the 3D version. And it comes with four pairs of 3D glasses.
The bonus features include extra songs from the concerts that were not in the original movie and a personal tour with Miley and the Jonas Brothers to see what a day is like in the life of a teenage rockstar!
This was definitely a fun flick!

We have had a lot of movies to review around here lately! We get so excited when the UPS man pulls up in front of our house with yet another movie - but, sometimes we get behind in watching them all! We’ve gotten some great kid ones lately that are a lot of fun!
The first one is a prequel to one of my very favorite Disney movies - The Little Mermaid! I was so excited to see this movie come out! It’s called The Little Mermaid - Ariel’s Beginning.
We watched this with my little nieces, who are seven and five years old. We have been watching them a lot - so they are getting to see a lot of these movies with us. They sat there perfectly quiet through this whole movie! And for the five year old, that is saying something! They really enjoyed it!
A cool thing about this movie, for all three girls, is that ‘Stephanie Tanner’ was in it! She was the voice actor for Ariel. They all really like her, so that made it that much more enjoyable!
In Ariel’s Beginning, we learn about Ariel’s mother and what happened to her. The family is relaxing in a lagoon above the water, and King Triton gives his wife, Queen Athena, a music box as a gift. Shortly after that, a ship full of pirates comes and attacks. Everyone gets away, but, Queen Athena, who is crushed by the ship.
The King is devastated and throws the music box away and bans music from the kingdom forever. The kingdom becomes a sad, quiet place and the seven daughters are placed under a strict schedule. Ariel longs for a different way of life for everyone and that is where the trouble comes in - and how she changes everything!

Smart People was one of those movies that I just did not want to end. It really would, I think, do well as a television series. I really enjoyed my time in the lives of the characters, and I would definitely want to spend more with them.
With a title like SMART PEOPLE, I figured it was going to be a movie that I really liked. And I was not wrong. I have spent my whole life living amongst very smart family members, and they are very endearing to me. They are such complex creatures. Yes, now we’re at the ‘Smart People Zoo’, kids. Ha! Really, though, they are such intense individuals, often so tormented by whatever demons that haunt the intellectually advanced. But they are also fascinating, usually funny, and often quite warm, generous people at heart.
This movie encompassed all of these things. The dad and the daughter were absolutely adorable in their wickedly dumb smartness. And those of you who’ve ever lived with a smart person know exactly what I mean!
I admit that I was at first thinking I just was not going to like the love interest’s character, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. I’ve kind of had a resentment towards her for a while since she left all of us dorks behind (a la SQUARE PEGS) and wandered into the fancy froufrou zone of SEX IN THE CITY. I was quite wrong, though! I loved her character in this movie and I think she just erased my resentment, seeing that she can, in fact, play more than a high-heels-and-man-obsessed New York frou frou doll.
It really was an enjoyable movie and I hope, if not a TV show, that there is at least a sequel or two. Watching these intelligent creatures is addictive!

I really enjoy romantic comedies - they are some of my favorite movies, so I was excited for the chance to see and review “Definitely, Maybe”. It turned out to be very different from your typical romantic comedy, though. For starters, there wasn’t tons of comedy in it, but, more importantly, I get to happily report to you that it was entirely unpredictable! A romantic comedy? Unpredictable? Yep, I know - weird, huh? It was delightfully unpredictable!
It was a very sweet movie about a young girl and her newly-divorced dad, taking a visit to his youth, through stories. She has been asking him repeatedly how he met her father and up to this point, he has put her off, saying, “It’s complicated, I’ll tell you when you’re older.”
Maya, his sweet and very precocious daughter puts her foot down this time, however! So he gives and tells her he will tell her the story - but! But what? He is going to change the names around and Maya has to figure out who in the story is actually her mother. Oh! She likes that idea! She calls it a “love story mystery” and excitedly fluffs up her pillows, arranges her stuffed animals, and sits back to hear the story!
The rest of the movie is a walk down memory lane with her father, exploring and remembering his young adult years, trying to make his way in the world and figure out what he wants to do with his life - and just with whom he wants to spend it!
It is a delightful story and the only part that I had a problem with, somewhat, was the ending. It was not entirely believable, given the newness of the divorce, but, I managed to suspend belief long enough to let myself enjoy the movie all the way to the end!
I can’t wait to see Abigail Breslin (the young girl) in more movies. She is absolutely adorable!

There is a new movie coming up that I am quite sure that I will be seeing alone. Which is totally fine by me! I can enjoy Johnny Depp all to myself! There is too much blood and gore for the children, and Mark flat out will not watch a musical. Even if it means his favorite actress, Nicole Kidman is in it. Yes - I get to enjoy Moulin Rouge all by my lonesome, too. And I like it that way just fine. It’s just a ‘me movie’ and I love my ‘me movies’!
Mr. Depp’s new movie is called Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. (It kind of feels funny to call him ‘Mr.’ Depp - like we’ve gone and gotten old or something. And I guess we have. But oh, how I loved him, adored him, in 21 Jumpstreet. Seems like a lifetime ago, and just yesterday, too.) Ok, back to the topic at hand - his new flick. It will be cool to see in the theater, but, I can’t wait until it comes out on DVD, so I can enjoy it all by my lonesome on one of my ‘me movie’ nights! I’ll watch it ov er and over again, just like I do Moulin Rouge.
There is a lot of cool buzz going around on the internet in reference to the new film. It’s almost like building up a cult following, before the movie is even out! I just love that! It makes going to see the movie that much more exciting! You can visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site to start out with. And you guys all know I love MySpace, and you can visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace - now that’s just cool! And their MySpace page looks really awesome!
A major part of the storyline, though, is revenge and you can get involved in the Sweeney Todd community by confessing revenge you’ve taken on someone. Just check out the Sweeney Todd Buzznet group and you will see there are several ways you can confess your revenge. There are already quite a few confessions there and it is really interesting and entertaining to hear and read all of them.
You wanna know what I did out of revenge? I’m purely evil, I tell you! Ok, well, every evening Mark puts his ‘to-go’ coffee cup on the counter next to the coffee pot when he comes home from work. He just brings it in from the car and sets it there. And every morning, I take him coffee in bed. Well - get this! One morning last week, I was mad at him from some moronic crap he’d said the night before - and when I poured his coffee …. I didn’t rinse out his cup first! HA!

The Mist by Stephen King looks so spooky and so good! There is just something so eery about a mist that consumes a town! And if that’s not enough - the mist is not empty! There are very scary creatures in the mist! From the preview, they look to me like giant bugs! Could you get any scarier than that? I’m going to have nightmares just from watching the previews!!
I have such a love/hate relationship with Stephen King’s material - you know what I mean? I go through peaks and valleys with my ‘allowing’ them into my head. Ha! He is absolutely amazing at crafting his stories, though - so amazing that it is truly sad to me to miss one of them. So for those times when I’m ’sworn off’ - I feel so utterly left out. Then I give in and thoroughly enjoy his latest creation, and am so glad I did, but, have nightmares and ’scaredy-cat-itise’ for weeks! Then I swear off of him, and the whole cycle begins again! Ha!
I think one of my very favorites would have to be Pet Sematary. In fact, that may just be the one that drew me ‘into the circle’ of fans. Just the title alone I’m sure made me look - I love pets and I love cemeteries. I’ve always been drawn to and fascinated by cemeteries. And who among us has not wished to bring someone, be they pet or human, back to life? That urge is so strong when someone (pet or human) dies, that it, to me, almost feels physical. So that story had many things to help me ignore my fear and dive into the chaotic and creepy world of Stephen King!
My brother was a big Cujo fan and when I finally saw it, I loved that one, too! And I really liked Thinner. It would be cool to have a collection of all of his books and movies, actually!
So yeah, I’m excited to see this latest release - it will be fun - in that, ‘I can’t breathe, I’m nauseous, turn on the lights, don’t leave me!’ kind of way!
